Kent was originally settled in the 1860s under the name Titusville. The city’s economy consisted largely of hops production, which resulted in a change of name to Kent after a major hops-producing region in England, Kent County. Kent was incorporated in 1890 as the second incorporated city in King County. Later, Kent became known as the “Lettuce Capital of the World.”
Today, Kent covers an area just over 34 square miles and is home to a population of 92,411. It is home to the headquarters of R.E.I., Seattle Bicycle Supply, the Oberto Sausage Company, Flow International Corporation, and the Omax Corporation.
